How to Run PSX Games on RetroPie Using PBP Files

If you're a retro gaming enthusiast, you might be interested in running your old PlayStation (PSX) games on your RetroPie system. One of the easiest ways to do this is by using PBP files, which are compressed ISO images that can be played directly on your PSP or RetroPie device.

To get started, open up the folder where your PBP files are stored and double-click on 'Theme Mode.' This will launch a simple and intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) that makes it easy to navigate your PBP files and configure your RetroPie settings.

Once you've opened Theme Mode, you can execute your PSX games using the command line. For example, to play Tekken 3, you would use the following command:

/opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/bin/retroarch -L /opt/retropie/libretrocores/lr-duckstation/duckstation_libretro.so -config /opt/retropie/configs/psx/retroarch.cfg '/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/psx/tekken3.PBP' -verbose -appendconfig /dev/shm/retroarch.cfg

This command tells RetroArch to launch the Tekken 3 PBP file using the duckstation_libretro.so core and config file.

If you don't have a PBP file for your PSX game, you'll need to create one. One way to do this is by using the PSX2PSP ripping software. This software can be downloaded from the official website and allows you to rip your PSX games to ISO or Bin/CCD format.

To use PSX2PSP, simply download the latest version (as of writing, it's v1.42) and extract it to a directory on your computer. Then, insert your PSX game into your CD drive and open up PSX2PSP. The software will automatically detect the game and allow you to rip it to ISO or Bin/CCD format.

Note that this method only works if you have Custom Firmware installed on your PSP. If you don't have Custom Firmware, you'll need to follow the instructions in the RetroPie documentation to install it.
